Dear Friend,

Thank you.

Your donation last week helped put four young refugees — all of them former children in detention — in the room with Immigration Minister Chris Bowen and other key politicians to tell their story.

Politicians were astounded. Some were in tears. These were children fleeing war and persecution. Three had already lost parents and siblings; two had also survived beatings and imprisonment in Indonesia for simply fleeing their country. And when they finally arrived in Australia, they were locked away again.

As GetUp members we have a lot to be proud of, but this is almost beyond words. Watch the video
here, and see exactly what you helped make happen.

The impact of what we achieved last week will soon be felt by more than 1000 children currently in detention. Just yesterday, Chris Bowen reaffirmed his promise before the nation’s Parliament to have the majority of children out of detention around Australia by June. It’s a promise that will be tough to meet, but we know together we can get there if we continue to hold our leaders accountable to the standards of humanity that stand at the very core of our nation’s moral authority.

Your donations exceeded what we needed to fund our delegation. So now we have a choice: we’re happy to refund you the difference of what we didn’t use; or we can put the remaining funds to bring leading refugee campaigners together in Canberra for a coordinated strategy day to build a long-term campaign to reform Australia’s refugee policy.

If you’d like a refund of your donation please email us at donations@getup.org.au, otherwise we’ll direct your contribution toward helping refugee campaigners develop their strategy for how they’ll continue to lobby Governments to update our laws and practices to bring some humanity to this debate.

Thank you again for being the kind of person who gives so generously to this movement,

Simon Sheikh
National Director
for the GetUp team

Great work, Get Up supporters! But don’t believe for a second that the war on child abuse is won. We the citizens of Australia must monitor what DIAC does to accomodate and “care” fro asylum seekers living among us. They are still unfree- and still unsure of their future. There is no compromise accepttable. Asylum seekers do not need to be detained in any way beyond initial clearances. How can a traumatised person learn English? Where is the human dignity if a man cannot work to provide for his family? Get to know your local asylum seekers and learn about their story and confront your member of Parliament. The injustice maust end. Follow the Chilout campaign and track what the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre reports on the emptying (we hope) of all places of detention of crime free people. Every day in jimmigration jail is a day too many.

Great campaign GetUp. The video was excellent as well. This is so badly needed to counter the nonsense of the talkback radio “shock jocks” who seem to dominate the debate and the “political agenda”.

The Unaccompanied Minors need your special support. Today , tomorrrow and God knows for how much longer. There were about 460 of them in immigration detention a month ago, and most of them are of Hazara ethnicity. While under 18 years of age the Minister for Immigration is their legal guardian – standing in the place of his parents if he still has both a mother and father. Many of the boys (there are only a handful of girls among them) are the surviving or chosen son to escape the genocide of Hazara people, in the hope they can get to a freedom country, get a good education and be able to send home some money to support those family members left behind. Yes, just like in the film clip.

Find out where the boys are located and try to befriend them.Immigration and Serco have put rules in place, but do not ne put off! The 150 or so on Christmas Island in apalling living conditions will be relocated to the Mainland as a matter of priority. We hope they will go into community detention – normal living places and not institutionalised centres of large group living. Melbourne has a group of over 130 boys living in Braoadmeadows – the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accomodation(MITA) , and and Darwin Airport Lodge there are over 100 – where reports of fighting self harm and growing mental illhealth are public.. It is an absolute scandal that some boys have been held there without access to schooling for many months. Just imagine the boredom and despair and the growing dysfunction. Find your local Hazara community and help them. Google Unaccompanied minors, Australia and inform yourself!

Great work but PLEASE remove the music from the video or else sub-title it. I’m afraid I found the music really annoying and distracting and I couldn’t hear what the young woman was saying. She has a quiet voice and the music drowned her out.

Thank YOU, Simon, for giving us the opportunity to be heard.

Let,s get a in depth discussion going on just “Who did Tony Abbott visit in London?” I suspect this visit had a GREAT DEAL to do with future Liberal party policy. Therefore affected Immigration & people in detention! Please have a think about the implications,HE VISITED LONDON while Julia went to see the troops! Even though he was invited on the troop visit! WOW,what could have been SO IMPORTANT?

What are the troops doing there in the first place?

Simon in think your wrong on this. Having spent time working in refugee camps there are many families that would be wonderful assets to our country. They are poor and can’t afford the ten thousand dollars each to get on a dangerous boat to come to Australia. We shouldn’t be encouraging this behavior. Releasing children will allow legal manuevours – this will encourage people to put their children on rickety boats and will encourage a form of child trafficking for those in need of children. Detention centers are luxury compared to refugee camps.

SO MUCH FOR GILLARD AND HER CARBON TAX –WILL SOMEONE TELL HER TO GET REAL –

    Are you sitting down?

Okay, here’s the bombshell. The volcanic eruption in Iceland, since its first spewing of volcanic ash has, in just FOUR DAYS, NEGATED EVERY SINGLE EFFORT you have made in the past five years to control CO2 emissions on our planet – all of you.

Of course you know about this evil carbon dioxide that we are trying to suppress – it’s that vital chemical compound that every plant requires to live and grow, and to synthesize into oxygen for us humans, and all animal life.

I know, it’s very disheartening to realize that all of the carbon emission savings you have accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of: driving Prius hybrids, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up till midnight to finish your kid’s “The Green Revolution” science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only two squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speedboat, vacationing at home instead of abroad, nearly getting hit every day on your bicycle, replacing all of your 50 cents light bulbs with $10.00 light bulbs…well, all of those things you have done have all gone down the tubes in just four days.

The volcanic ash emitted into the Earth’s atmosphere in just four days – yes – FOUR DAYS ONLY by that volcano in Iceland, has totally erased every single effort you have made to reduce the evil beast, carbon. And there are around 200 active volcanoes on the planet spewing out this crud any one time – EVERY DAY.

I don’t really want to rain on your parade too much, but I should mention that when the volcano Mt Pinatubo erupted in thePhilippines in 1991, it spewed out more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire human race had emitted in its entire YEARS on earth. Yes folks, Mt Pinatubo was active for over one year – think about it.

Of course I shouldn’t spoil this touchy-feely tree-hugging moment and mention the effect of solar and cosmic activity and the well-recognized 800-year global heating and cooling cycle, which keep happening, despite our completely insignificant efforts to affect climate change.

And I do wish I had a silver lining to this volcanic ash cloud but the fact of the matter is that the bush fire season across the western USA and Australia this year alone will negate your efforts to reduce carbon in our world for the next two to three years. And it happens every year.

Just remember that your government just tried to impose a whopping carbon tax on you on the basis of the bogus “human-caused” climate change scenario.

Hey, isn’t it interesting how they don’t mention “Global Warming” any more, but just “Climate Change” – you know why? It’s because the planet has COOLED by 0.7 degrees in the past century and these global warming bull artists got caught with their pants down.

And just keep in mind that you might yet have an Emissions Trading Scheme – that whopping new tax – imposed on you, that will achieve absolutely nothing except make you poorer. It won’t stop any volcanoes from erupting, that’s for sure.

But hey, relax, give the world a hug and have a nice day!

PS: I wonder if Iceland is buying carbon offsets?

Frederika, why don’t you get a real job like the majority of people instead of being a lefty bleeding heart
I am tied of reading your rot in newspapers

  • Frederika Steen

Full time worker for 37 years, paid my taxes,
In this democracy I still have freedom of speech and I can be and believe what I like within the law. What’s your record, Greeny 77? Do people matter more than things to you?

  • Thorne

Boat people are just queue jumpers. Are they more deserving than people trapped in refugee camps who don’t have the money to bribe government officials and pay off people smugglers?

Why should they be treated differently because they turn up on our doorstep? For every bleeding heart story boat people tell there’s a 100 worse back in the refugee camps who don’t get to tell it media while asking for special treatment.

Don’t stick em in detention centres. Send them straight back and they can apply like everyone else. If you send them back immediately, they won’t risk their lives or their children’s lives on leaky boats run by criminals. Safer and fairer for everyone.

If you want to help refugees campaign for more refugees, not special treatment for illegal immigrants.

  • naive readers

Tim Flannery said ….. it will take 1000 years to get carbon right right ???? I wonder how many people will be here then and how many cows farting there will be to feed them all. this is a money grab to get the budget right, thats why swan is running around with his head off.
Thats why electricity is being put up (all around Australia)to get us ready if the carbon tax gets through, and then they will say “see it didn’t increase price)
Come on on Australia wake up, you are being dudded again (Y2K), and finally stop listening to that idiot Shiek, he wants into parliament please don’t grease his way

  • Wickedguy333

They should turn the boats back and let the real refugees come to this country NOT the ones that pay big $$$. The real refugees are in refugee camps…. the illegal ones that come by boat are paying 10k per person
